A seminar to be held in Castlebar next week will try to combat the problem of bullying at home and in the workplace, which according to research carried out by the Samaritans is increasing during these times of economic downturn, with one in four homes experiencing incidents of bullying and one in four employees being bullied in the workplace.

Parent assertiveness

Many children are very confident these days. Encouraging your children to be confident is important but sometimes children can easily move from confidence into trying to exert control over parents. A six week course on parent assertiveness is being held by the Family Centre at Chapel Street, Castlebar. The course will look at ways in which parents can teach children to be respectful and follow direction without allowing themselves to be compromised. The course will examine how parents can be assertive, direct, and open without being aggressive. The course runs for one night a week for six weeks starting at 8pm on Tuesday October 13.

The Irish Stammering Association's Galway self help group is due to meet again in December. The group provides opportunities for people who stutter to discuss issues around their stammering, as well as providing mutual support. Many people who have attended groups have found them to be very helpful in feeling more comfortable with their stammering.
